How do I Run Tool Suites Network Diagnostics on a Serial Radio Network
The following procedure describes how to setup and run Tool Suite Network Diagnostic on a Serial Radio network. The following serial radios are supported:
- FGR-C
- FGR2-C/CE/T
- FGR3-C/CE/T
- LRS-455-C/CE
- GX-C/CE/T
- GXM
- MM2-T/LV/LF
- MM3-T
- MM2-MR
To assist with managing a FreeWave serial radio networks it is often helpful to generate a FreeWave Network file (FWN.) This file is obtained by running Network Diagnostics in FreeWave Tool Suite.
Requirements Needed to Run Tool Suite Network Diagnostics:
- Windows XP or newer MS Operating system.
- Tool Suite Supports the following MS Operating systems:
- Windows XP
- Windows 7
- Windows 8
- Windows Vista
- Windows 10
- Windows 11
- Tool Suite Supports the following MS Operating systems:
- A DB-9 Serial port or USB-to-DB9 dongle.
- FreeWave Tool Suite 2.11.2 or later
- You can download the latest version here: ToolSuite 2.11.3
- Diagnostic cable
- ASC0409DC – enclosed radios
- ASC2009DC – board level radios
- Physical access to the master radio.
- Remote diagnostics is possible with special setup
Verifying Configuration before Running Network Diagnostics
Toll Suite Network Diagnostics can only be run from the Master radio. You must have physical access to the Master Radio. The following steps will verify Tool Suite and the Master Serial radio are setup to Run Network Diagnostics successfully.
- Connect to the master radio with the diagnostic cable.
- Launch FreeWave Tool Suite.
- Click Configuration on the left hand panel.
- Ensure the COM port is correct for your serial port or USB to serial converter.
- Click Read Radio on the top bar.
- Click the (5) MultiPoint Parameters tab for the master radio.
- Ensure Diagnostics field is set to 1. If Diagnostics is zero (0) change it to “1” then click All in the upper right-hand corner (upside-down blue triangle).
- In the upper right-hand corner, select the Options drop-down menu and select Network Settings...
- In the Network Settings dialog that opens, verify the following:
- The COM port on the Interface line is the correct COM port to talk to the Radio.
- Click the Change button to change the COM port if it is not correct.
- The Polling mode should be Discovery
- The COM port on the Interface line is the correct COM port to talk to the Radio.
- Whether you made changes or not, close out of the window by clicking the Update button.
Running Network Diagnostics

- On the left-hand list of Applications, click the Network Diagnostics icon.
- Click Add Network at the top of the screen.
- Follow through prompts to create a new serial network.
- Give the Network a name, like the site location or name of the sensor or tower or location.
- Add the company name in as well. Use the company that owns the network.
- Click the Next button.
- Verify the Network Type is "serial"
- Click Finish.
- Click Start in the upper left hand corner.
- At this point you should see the master radio appear under Path View within about 2-3 minutes.
- If you do not see the master, try rebooting the master radio and/or starting/stopping Network Diagnostics and/or stopping/starting the Tool Suite app.
- As the diagnostics runs it will discover other radios in the network and add them to the Path View.
- You can select the radios in the Path View to see the RF data coming in for them.
- Reference the Tool Suite User Manual for further descriptions and use of the Graphs.
- Let Network Diagnostics run for at minimum of 1 hour, but longer is better.
- After it has run for the specified time click Stop in the top left of the window.
- Click Options in the upper right hand corner then Export -> FreeWave Network File (FWN)
- If doing this in the Network Diagnostics application it will prompt for the Date range
- If you just stopped Network Diagnostics, you can leave the defaults. If not, you may need to select the date range when Network Diagnostics was run.
- Save this file to your computer.
- E-mail this file as an attachment to the Support Technician you’ve been working with.
